Sorry if this makes me stupid, but although I have read all the manga and watched all the eps multiple times, I dont really remember it saying how many paths besides it calls RS the "sage of the six paths" and when Konan says that Nagato's ocular powers gives him the ability to use the 6 paths of pain, and puts him outside the realm of life and death...that Nagato is the 7th path.

Then when retrieving the Rinnegan, Madara says "you are the third of the six paths" http://www.mangabit.com/manga/naruto/ch ... 10/page/16

So, I guess what I am asking is, 1) does anyone know what is the difference between the paths of pain and these paths that madara is talking about?

2)What exactly are the paths that Madara is talking about?

3) why are these paths important?

and, 4) If nagato is the third of these 6 paths, who are the other 5?

First of all, Nagato is not the 7th Path. Death God (Outer Path) is the 7th Path.



Actually, Madara's specifications here are not Nagato's Paths. Its Sage of Six Paths, i.e. Rikudo Sennin...

He proclaims himself as 2nd Rikudo Sennin
He proclaims Nagato as 3rd Rikudo Sennin

I hope that settles it...

1st Rikudo Sennin -> Rikudo Sennin himself
2nd Rikudo Sennin -> Uchiha Madara (Self Proclaimed)
3rd Rikudo Sennin -> Nagato Uzumaki (Proclaimed by Madara posthumously)

Im still a bit confused now, because you say RS is the 1st RS, madara the second RS and Nagato the 3rd, and normally that would make sense to me, but in what you quoted he says "I am Uchiha Madara! The man who obtained Senju Hashirama's powers!...Two of the 6 paths are now one being!" To me what he is saying is that either 1) He and Hashirama are both one of the 6 paths and are now one being or...2) Senju and Uchiha are both one of the 6 paths.

I believe it is the latter and that would make sense in my mind because Nagato being "the third path" would be Uzumaki.
