As I definitly should work on something related to Naruto (or at least Shounen :X) again, I'll give it a try as well tomorrow, can't be bad having two versions and I always liked the shot anyways

Looks fine To eliminate the last flaws of the original outlines (as they, of course, are concepted as black and white only - so they are not really suited for colourisations in the end) it would take remaking the outlines though. Well, that's a step into a very work-intensive way of coloursations then. Best way to draw outlines is using the Pen tool, I recently made a brief youtube overview on how to use it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7UVPLNwEc6QAfter the Pen tool Path suits the original outlines, just adjust the brush to standard settings with width 2 or 3, go back to pen tool, press right mouse button and "draw path". As this, done on an empty layer, will really only have the outlines and everything else will be transparent, it's easy to just put the colours into different layers underneath these outlines. Also it's easy to fit in the colour layers correctly as magic wand will be able to pick the areas very precisely then. So, if anyone wants them: Cleaned Outlines for Hinata (1400x945px)

So, I made a basic colouring, without soft shading and with a super simplified background but at least it's something with colours @ Krishnar: I recommend moving the colour slider always pretty far to the black/white side to weaken the colours a little as loud colours don't look very suitable imo ^^

Thanks alot you two (Layers on the right side from top to bottom: 1. A Layer used to paint highlights overcasting the outlines - to be precisely it has only been used for the Eye highlights here 2. The Outlines 3. "Hinata Farben": A folder containing all colour layers for Hinata 4. A mask for the pupils 5. The pupil base colour (and so on)) That's pretty much it for the concept: Coloured layers containing base colours, each having a layer mask for shadows/highlights and the Outlines are on top so they are always visible. And it's only a long text because I wanted to have it easily understandable and spare you any searching, just in case I just had the outlines as top layer as they only have the outlines anyways while the rest is transparent. If the outline layer is not transparent but filled with white, just change the mode to "Multiply" instead of "Normal" to have the colours below shining through the non-black areas.
Below the outlines there are the different colour layers. It's easier to get a result by diverting the colours onto many single layers, like one for the hair, one for the eyebrows, one for the face, one for the neck and so on. These layers contain the base colour only, no shadows or highlights or whatsoever. It is important to select the right area precisely to make the colours fit very well. The usual approach is as following: Use Magic Wand tool with Tolerance somewhere between 10 and 100 and select the general area for a certain colour, let's say the hair for example. If the to be coloured area is diverted by the outlines into several paths, just add each part with shift-click using the magic wand. When everything which is supposed to have a certain colour is selected, go "Select -> Modify -> Expand" and expand the selection by one or two pixels (depending on the width of your outlines. Usually expending by one pixel is best). Now some parts might not have been selected properly, especially in sharp edges. Just add these parts with the Lasso tool to your selection. Then fill the colour into the colour layer (name each of them properly as with this method a lot of layers will be created). If there still are white spots where no are supposed to be, just paint them with the Brush tool.
For each colour layer, I create one layer mask with standard settings (normal/100% and so on). I put the shadows and possible highlights on these. It is easier to make them fit this way then putting them directly on the layer below, as the pixels on the layer mask will only be displayed if there's something on the layer undeath it: Means, if you for example paint black shadows onto the hair, these brush strokes will only be visible where there is hair underneath it. I usually paint hard shadows (like every single of those used for hinata as I did not do any soft shading) with the Pen tool and use "Fill Path". For Soft Shading and Highlights I use the Gradient Tool (Settings "From Foreground to Transparent", Opacity 5-20%, Linear Gradient/Radial Gradient/Reflected Gradient). For the highlight on Hinata's Konoha badge I used a Linear Gradient from the top and a Reflected Gradient in the middle for example.
For highlights in the eye, it might be best to create a layer on top of the outlines layer and paint the highlight with the brush tool at a very low "Hardness" setting for the brush (you can select this where the brush size is selected, too). This way it will shine above the pupil outlines and look much better.
For the background I just used the original file and filled some areas with Fill or gradients using the "Multiply" mode to maintain the outlines. So, if anyone wants it as an example: Here's the PSD file. http://www.mediafire.com/?94bn77p4inuhmm1Edit: Didn't make a soft shade version yet, but added a slight glow effect:

Haha yeah sorry, well I guess looking at the psd file will be enough to grasp the concept just by going through the layers and checking what's on which layer (the layer names are in German mostly but I guess it will be easy enough to understand overall as the structure is simple) currently I'm trying to improve my soft shading by working on this Shot from Berserk, lovely one of Gutsu and Caska Lately I'm trying to make most shadings with a mask layer with a very extreme -almost black- shadow, add a mask to the mask and weaken it partially to soften up the shadow. Simple colourisation of Suzuki-Kun of Flat: Update: Gonna try out a new style, picked this shot of Gatsu and a little girl

So, I finally started using a Deviant Art account Here's my first upload to it, my recently finished colourisation of Gatsu and Jill from Volume 16 of Kentaro Miura's Berserk: http://t33k3ss3lch3n.deviantart.com/art ... -186948515 Edit: Currently working on a lot of images from Berserk, like this Golden Age cover: Edit 2: But before Berserk, I'm working on a panel of Vinland Saga because it's epic A small update on it: Edit 3: Finished the first panel and made a Signature of it

Wow thanks a lot I feel some improvement, but I still see so many things I got to improve and lack experience for Well, gonna make another Vinland Saga panel I guess, probably will continue with Berserk afterwards. But actually I have some kind of urge to make some Naruto shots in between quickly to check out how far I improved, after all the Naruto panels are much easier to colourise than those of Seinen. Typical Naruto/Shounen Outlines: Typical Seinen (Berserk in this case) Outlines: Quite obviously it's so much more detail in those Outlines of Seinen, so it's many many more base colours, small shadings and shadows to make. Since I only colourised Seinen shots for a time (exept for the Hinata Cover which I rushed) my hope is that my skills in colouring Shounen improved even more. I'm gonna it check out these days Current projects: Thorfinn lays in ambush: And: Fi in a space suit (from "Planetes"): And: The Jarl and the Thrall from Vinland Saga: Latest Updates:
